Introduction
The flag of Logroño is white with a dark red saltire, a diagonal cross reaching the four corners of the cloth. The city council fixes the proportions at 2:3 and the arms of the saltire at exactly one sixth of the width of the flag.
It carries no coat of arms. Logroño has a shield, and a detailed one, but the flag deliberately leaves it off.
Meaning & Symbolism
The diagonal cross is the Cross of Saint Andrew, in memory of the apostle crucified on a cross of that shape. By tradition it was a badge of the House of Burgundy, granted as a mark of nobility by the Spanish monarchs.
Logroño earned it on a specific day. Ferdinand III of Castile granted the cross in 1237 for the help the people of Logroño gave at the taking of Baeza, fought on 30 November 1227, the feast of Saint Andrew.
History of the Logroño Flag
The colour of the saltire was not always settled. An ordinance of 1728 laid down that the cross on the flag had to be red, that being the national colour, and even after this flags in other shades stayed in circulation.
The Burgundy saltire is not unique to Logroño. The same design runs through the Basque Country and La Rioja, Vitoria among them, and it travelled with the Spanish empire: it survives in the flags of the United States states of Florida and Alabama.
The city shield, which the flag does not carry, is a separate story. It shows the old fortified stone bridge over the Ebro, already cited in the municipal charter of 1095 and demolished at the end of the nineteenth century, with three fleurs de lis granted by Charles I for the defeat of Franco Navarrese troops in 1521. In 2024 the council went back to the original 1523 design, without crown or legend.

Construction Sheet
The flag follows a standard 2:3 proportion. The design consists of a solid crimson red field. The city's coat of arms is placed in the center, its height typically measuring half the hoist width to ensure clear visibility. The arms are usually rendered in full heraldic color, including shades of blue, gold, white, and red, detailed with black outlines.

Common Misidentifications
Rarely misidentified due to its unique central coat of arms, though from a distance the solid red field could be mistaken for other simple red flags.
