Introduction
The flag of León, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, is a green field inside a gold border, charged with the arms of the municipality and the legend MUNICIPIO DE LEÓN, GTO. below them.
It is easily confused with the flag of León in Spain, which is crimson with a purple lion and has nothing to do with this city beyond the shared name.
Meaning & Symbolism
The arms carry a lion, which is the pun the city is named for, alongside devices for its origins in the Bajío. A scroll beneath the shield carries the municipal motto.
The gold border and the spelled out legend are the giveaway that this is a modern municipal banner rather than an old heraldic one. Writing the name of the municipality on the cloth is a convention of twentieth century Mexican civic flags, not of the heraldry the arms themselves come from.
History of the León Flag
The city was founded on 20 January 1576 by Juan Bautista de Orozco, acting on the order of the viceroy Martín Enríquez de Almansa, under the name Villa de León. It took its present name, León de los Aldama, in 1830, honouring the insurgents Juan and Ignacio Aldama of the Mexican war of independence.
The flag is much younger and its adoption date is not recorded in the sources available, but León holds a distinction worth noting: it was the first municipality in Guanajuato to officially adopt a municipal flag.
Curiosities
- León was the first municipality in the state of Guanajuato to officially adopt a municipal flag.
- It is not the Spanish León. That flag is crimson with a purple lion and belongs to a different city on a different continent.
- The city was founded on 20 January 1576 as Villa de León, on the order of viceroy Martín Enríquez de Almansa.
- It took the name León de los Aldama in 1830, for the independence insurgents Juan and Ignacio Aldama.
- Writing MUNICIPIO DE LEÓN, GTO. across the cloth marks this as a modern civic banner rather than an inherited heraldic one.

Construction Sheet
The flag follows a standard 2:3 proportion. The purple field occupies the entire flag. The golden lion is centered, with its height typically spanning approximately two-thirds of the flag's hoist. The lion's design should follow the traditional heraldic blazon: rampant, crowned, facing the hoist, with details (claws, tongue) in red. Official color specifications may define the purple using Pantone or RGB codes for consistent reproduction.
