Kentucky Flag

The flag of Kentucky features a navy blue field with the state seal at its center, encircled by the state's official name and two sprigs of goldenrod, the state flower. The seal depicts a pioneer and a statesman in an embrace, symbolizing unity and cooperation. The design is simple yet symbolic, relying on a single, prominent emblem on a solid background to convey its message.

Adopted in the early 20th century, the flag's color scheme of navy blue and gold is both dignified and visually striking, ensuring good visibility. The central image on the seal shows a frontiersman and a gentleman in a suit shaking hands, representing the unity between the people of the frontier and the statesmen of the East. The state motto, 'United We Stand, Divided We Fall', arches above them, reinforcing this theme of solidarity. The embrace is set against a backdrop of a log cabin and a horse, symbols of Kentucky's pioneer heritage and its reputation for breeding thoroughbreds.

The current flag was adopted by the Kentucky General Assembly on March 26, 1918. Prior to this, Kentucky did not have an official state flag, though militia regiments used various banners. The design was the result of a collaborative effort, with the final artwork created by Jesse Cox Burgess, an art teacher from Frankfort, who was commissioned for the task.

The flag's design has remained consistent since its adoption, with only minor artistic modifications to the seal over the decades. It was preceded by an unofficial flag featuring the state seal on a dark blue field, which served as inspiration for the official version. The 1918 act specifically described the flag's elements, cementing its legal status.
