Introduction

The flag of Curaçao is a blue field crossed by a yellow stripe set a little below the middle, with two white five-pointed stars in the canton, one larger than the other.

Meaning & Symbolism

The blue above the stripe is the sky and the blue below is the sea, with the yellow stripe between them standing for the sun that separates one from the other.

The two stars are Curaçao and Klein Curaçao, the small uninhabited island to its southeast. The five points of each star are read as the five continents the islanders came from.

History of the Curaçao Flag

The flag was adopted in 1984 for the island territory within the Netherlands Antilles. When the Antilles were dissolved on 10 October 2010 and Curaçao became a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the flag carried over unchanged.

Curiosities

  • The smaller star is Klein Curaçao, an uninhabited island of about 1.7 square kilometres.
  • The five points of each star stand for the five continents the population came from.
  • The yellow stripe sits below the midline on purpose, so the sea reads as deeper than the sky.
  • The flag survived the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010 without a single change.
  • The blue appears twice with two different meanings, sky above the stripe and sea below it.
