Meaning & Symbolism
White represents peace and freedom, green symbolizes the forests and agricultural wealth of the country, and red evokes the courage of the Bulgarian people and the blood shed in the struggle for independence. The colors were inspired by the Russian flag, replacing blue with green.
History
Adopted in 1879 after independence from the Ottoman Empire. During communism (1946-1990) it had a lion coat of arms. The version without coat of arms was restored in 1991.
Curiosities
Bulgaria was the only Axis country that did not deport Jews during WWII. The lion from the old coat of arms appears on many historical monuments and buildings.
