Flags That Changed in the 21st Century
Although flags tend to be stable symbols, the 21st century has seen several significant changes.
Myanmar (2010)
Myanmar adopted a new flag with three stripes (yellow, green, red) and a white star, as part of its political transition.
Libya (2011)
Under Gaddafi, Libya had the simplest flag in the world: a completely green rectangle. After his fall, the flag of the former Kingdom of Libya was restored.
Malawi (2010-2012)
In 2010, the red rising sun was changed to a full white sun. After the president's death in 2012, the original flag was restored.
Mauritania (2017)
Mauritanians voted to add red stripes at the top and bottom, representing the blood of defenders against colonialism.
New Zealand (2016)
Referendums were held to change the flag, but 56.6% voted to keep it.
Mississippi (2021)
Mississippi removed the Confederate emblem and adopted a new flag featuring a magnolia.
South Sudan (2011)
The world's youngest country adopted its own flag upon independence.
