Atlanta Flag

The flag of Atlanta, Georgia, is a distinctive municipal banner featuring a dark blue field with a central white circle containing a stylized golden phoenix. The phoenix is depicted rising from flames, a direct reference to the city's rebirth after the Civil War. Below the central emblem, the flag is divided by a wide red horizontal band edged in gold, which adds a bold stripe of color to the design.

The flag's layout is clean and symbolic, with the central emblem clearly framed against the dark background. The use of heraldic colors—blue, white, gold, and red—creates a visually striking and easily recognizable flag. Its design is considered a strong example of modern civic vexillology, effectively communicating the city's identity and history through simple, powerful symbols.

The central symbol, the phoenix rising from flames, represents Atlanta's reconstruction and resurgence after being burned by Union forces in 1864. This imagery is the city's official seal and its most potent historical metaphor. The golden color of the phoenix symbolizes the enduring wealth and prosperity the city achieved following its recovery.

The current flag was officially adopted on February 26, 2017, replacing a previous, more complex design that had been in use since 1874. The redesign was initiated by then-Councilmember Alex Wan and involved a public competition and selection process. The winning design was created by local graphic designer M. F. DeMarse, who streamlined the city's traditional symbols into a more modern and effective flag.

The adoption of the new flag followed the principles of good flag design popularized by the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA), aiming for a simple, meaningful, and memorable emblem. The 1874 flag, which featured a locomotive and other detailed imagery, was retired due to its complexity and poor visibility at a distance.
