Introduction

The flag of the Arab League is a green field bearing a white crescent that opens upward, surrounded by a chain and enclosed in a laurel wreath. Inside the crescent sits the name of the organisation in Arabic script: جامعة الدول العربية, the League of Arab States.

Meaning & Symbolism

The green is the colour most associated with Islam. The crescent is the same symbol, turned upward so that it holds the name rather than sitting beside it.

The chain around the crescent is the bond between the member states, and the laurel wreath is the usual mark of achievement. The links of the chain are sometimes counted as the founding members.

History of the Arab League Flag

The League was founded in Cairo on 22 March 1945, following the Alexandria Protocol of 1944, with seven members: Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria and North Yemen.

It now has 22 members, three of which are not Arab states in the strict sense: the Comoros, Djibouti and Somalia. Its stated aim is to draw the member states closer and coordinate their policies.

Curiosities
