Introduction
The flag of Anguilla is a British Blue Ensign with a white shield in the fly carrying three orange dolphins in a circle above a band of light blue.
Meaning & Symbolism
The three dolphins stand for friendship, wisdom and strength, and the circle they form is read as endurance and continuity. The blue band beneath them is the sea.
The design is known on the island as the Dolphin flag.
History of the Anguilla Flag
The dolphins are older than the flag and come out of a rebellion. In 1967 Anguilla broke away from the federation of Saint Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla, and the breakaway republic used a flag with the three dolphins on it.
British forces landed in 1969, the island stayed British by its own choice, and the dolphins survived into the official arms. The present flag was adopted on 30 May 1990.
